This is not entirely Google's fault. As I recall*, the incumbents were doing their damnedest to deny Google access to existing infra (utility poles, buried, etc.), which significantly slowed the roll out (while also increasing the cost). I did eventually get Google Fiber at my home and it was amazing. 1Gb for $70 with no contract and I don't remember having a single outage.

*I bought a new build in 2016 in South Austin and had to wait some time before Google Fiber became available



I waited over two years after signup, but they finally delivered in 2021.
