Fish sauce smells horrible when you first add it to a pan, curry paste and peppers release a bit of tear gas when heating up.

Steak smells awful in your hair, clothes and drapes. The smoke blackens everything.

Fish smells nice on the plate and awful everywhere else.

Broccoli, etc.
